The League: Breaking down the Day One parties

Let’s be clear: We don’t get to all of the parties; no one really can. And we tend to favor events sponsored by businesses and chambers (it’s our audience) more than those sponsored by politicians (though we did get to some).

With that in mind, here are our thoughts after hitting nearly a dozen events on the first day of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities event, taking place this week in Atlantic City.

Most crowded: Mikie Sherrill’s event at the Hard Rock had a line out the door throughout. An event by Steve Sweeney at an Irish Pub had a similar situation, as did a party sponsored by Essex County.

Most crowded, Part II: The Middlesex County event at the Hard Rock won the early nighttime slot. It seemingly had as many people outside the huge ballroom as it did inside. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin certainly was there – as was Gov. Phil Murphy.

Most noteworthy: All of the gubernatorial candidates are here – making the rounds to as many meet and greets as possible. This year, perhaps still smarting from the recent election, there was an increased emphasis to attend parties held by chambers that serve the underserved. Perhaps they are no longer taking votes for granted.

Best food: Veterans know the African American Chamber event always has the best food. This year did not disappoint. Two carving stations, three varieties of pasta, both shrimp and crab – skip the fancy dinners and head here.

Best atmosphere: The Hispanic Chamber, which holds its event at the Noyes Arts Garage, always brings another level of festiveness – and does so at a most unique location.

Best combo event: The event co-hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey and CGI, drew a huge crowd to the Balcony Bar at Ocean – a crowd that was far more than just South Jersey folks.

Best kickoff event: Winning your time slot is great. Winning the first time slot is even better. It appears most people headed to the party sponsored by Solar Landscape and State Sen. Vin Gopal to start their day.
