Saint Michael’s Medical Center, Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and St. Luke’s Warren Campus were among 75 hospitals in the country to be named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group identified the top hospitals from a pool of nearly 2,400 hospitals nationwide. The honorees were announced Tuesday morning.
Leapfrog said the rigorous standards defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology includes the quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance. Among the metrics considered in establishing the qualifications for the award include infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors.
To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety and achieve top performance in their category.
Saint Michael’s CEO, Dr. Alan Sickles, obviously was thrilled.
“Receiving the Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital distinction is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our entire team to providing the highest standards of patient care, safety, and innovation,” he said.
“This recognition reflects our dedication to fostering excellence in teaching and empowering the next generation of healthcare professionals. I am incredibly proud of our staff, physicians, and educators who make this achievement possible every day.”
Bergen New Bridge CEO Deb Visconi also was pleased.
“This designation does more than recognize our team’s commitment to quality – it also reassures the diverse communities we serve that Bergen New Bridge is here for them, providing all the care they need in the safest possible environment,” she said. “I am an incredibly proud CEO because this recognition is a testament to our team’s dedication to providing high-quality, accessible care to all those we serve.”
Warren Geller, CEO of Englewood Health, called the recognition a great honor for all.
“Achieving national recognition as a top teaching hospital, again ranking our hospital among the best in the country for safe and effective care, is an honor that belongs to our entire team,” he said. “Thank you to our wonderful team, who come to work every day to care for others and bring their personal best to ensure the highest levels of patient safety and quality care for every one of our patients.”
The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers known as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality. Its CEO, Leah Binder, said protecting patients from preventable harm is central to the group’s mission.
