Ryder of Rowan named a 2024 Veteran Champion of the Year in Higher Education

John Ryder, director of student affairs and military services at Rowan University, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Veterans Champion of the Year in Higher Education Award.

The award is given annually by Military Friendly, a national organization that promotes the welfare of veterans. This award recognizes educators who go above and beyond in advocating for the advancement and success of student veterans in higher education.

Ryder was one of 31 recipients this year.

“I have always lived by the saying, never leave anyone behind,” said Ryder. “I carry that through today by continuing to help those student veterans I serve and those veterans I come across.”

Ryder is a Gulf War veteran and former Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard where he served for eight years (1989-1997). He credits the devotion to duty he learned in the service as the foundation for his work.

This work includes helping military service members transition to civilian life and ensuring military students and local veterans receive the benefits and support they need.

Ryder oversees the Military Services Offices across both of Rowan’s campuses and he serves as a Department of Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official.

He also advises and mentors Rowan’s Student Veterans of America chapter, fostering a strong community that celebrates the shared bonds of military service.

Among the programs Ryder has championed at Rowan are the “Boots to Business” entrepreneurial education and training program sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, and partnerships with county and local veterans affair offices.

As a result of Ryder’s leadership, Rowan has been designated a 2024-2025 Military Friendly School and a 2024 Military Spouse Friendly School.

Ryder also established the “Military Wall of Fame” at Rowan to recognize both students and employees who have served in the military.

“We’ve made some great strides over the years,” said Ryder. “I’m thankful that President Keating and the Board of Trustees recognizes what we’re doing, and they continue to support us with whatever we need. It feels good to give back from one veteran to another. It is a brotherhood and a sisterhood. We enjoy what we do and take great pride in it too.”
