Indeed offers seven ways employers benefit by hiring veterans

Indeed is the free job search app that at any time has thousands of job postings. More than 3.5 million businesses use Indeed to find and hire employees. Indeed recently shared a perspective on the seven ways a business can benefit from hiring veterans.

Here is a summary of these seven benefits:

1. Potential Tax Breaks

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit allows businesses to claim a deduction when they hire from certain groups including veterans. These deductions can add up to significant savings depending on the number of veterans hired.

This deduction is scheduled to expire at the end of 2025.

2. Salary Subsidies During Training

The Veterans Administration has on-the-job training funds available through the Veteran Readiness and Employment program. It subsidizes a veteran employee’s wages allowing businesses to reduce onboarding costs.

3. Salary Reimbursement

The Special Employer Incentive Program is a benefit that reimburses employers for hiring veterans who meet certain requirements.

The reimbursement can cover up to half of the veteran employee’s salary for a maximum of six months. The reimbursement can also cover the costs of training, supplies, and equipment.

This program is designed for veterans who have struggled to get hired after serving. Eligibility is on a case-by-case-basis.

4. Strong Work Ethic

Looking to hire veterans?

Indeed has a specific section on its website for businesses interested in hiring veterans. Click here.

You can also find qualified applicants by contacting a Regional Veterans’ Employment Coordinator. You can find the coordinator for your area by going to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website and select your state from the drop-down menu to find a representative in your area.

The representative will refer to you available applicants and guide you through the process of signing up for VA support.

Veterans bring an impressive work ethic to a job.

Learning how to accomplish goals and work well as a team is inherent in military life. Veterans frequently work in uncomfortable, stressful situations, making them well prepared for the challenges of a civilian job.

5. Organizational Skills

Because of the structure of military life, veterans often bring strong organizational skills to a job. The high-powered, high-pressure environment common in the military requires veterans to learn how to establish and track priorities.

6. Accountability

Veterans typically have a high level of personal accountability and are committed to take responsibility for their behavior. They take their assignments seriously and strive for excellence, just like they did when they were working as part of a team in the service.

7. Leadership Skills

Because the structure in the military is hierarchical, veterans often take extra responsibility and assume leadership roles.

Veterans likely exercised leadership responsibilities throughout their military career. As a result, veteran employees may have a high aptitude to grow in your company, mentor others, and make sound strategic decisions.
