Teamwork always leads to better outcomes. In health care, it can have life-saving benefits.
That’s why Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care team members at Cooper University Hospital in Camden were excited to announce they had surpassed 1,000 cardiac surgeries in 2024, the highest number in South Jersey, and third highest in the state.
Officials at both systems said this is a significant milestone and represents a tremendous amount of dedication, skill, and teamwork on the part of the entire Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care team, including surgeons, critical care intensivists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and support staff.
“This milestone is a testament to Cooper and Inspira’s commitment to providing high-quality cardiac care and improving the lives of our patients,” Dr. Phillip Koren, director of Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care and the Cooper Heart Institute, said.
The impact is in the data.
Studies have shown that surgical volume is associated with better outcomes for patients undergoing complex procedures, including cardiac surgery.
Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care’s team of experts have significant experience in various types of complex cases. In fact, Cooper is among U.S. News and World Report’s High Performing Hospitals for Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Attacks, and Heart Failure. The range of cardiac surgical procedures provided include coronary artery bypass graft, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, minimally invasive aortic valve surgery, and minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.
Dr. Michael Rosenbloom, head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cooper University Health Care and member of Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care, said experience matters.
“High-volume centers see a greater number of cases, which allows surgeons to refine their skills, develop best practices, and ultimately provide better care for their patients,” he said. “Not only does this achievement signify the positive impact Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care has had on the lives of countless patients and their families, but each surgery also represents a unique story of hope and healing.”
