What They Say: Saint Michael’s Medical Center has appointed an accomplished heart surgeon with more than three decades of experience as its chief of cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Tyrone Krause, assumed the role at both Saint Michael’s and St. Mary’s Hospital last month.
Krause returns to Saint Michael’s after serving as the chief of surgery at Jersey City Medical Center from 2012 to February 2024. He will take over the duties from Dr. Nilesh Patel, who served as chief for more than 12 years.
Krause has performed more than 12,000 cardiac surgeries and has consistently maintained a mortality rate for coronary artery bypass graft surgeries well below the New Jersey state average. His innovative contributions include the development of a blood conservation program, an atrial fibrillation protocol, early extubating times and reduced length of stay for patients, all of which have significantly improved outcomes for his patients.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Krause back to the medical center,” Saint Michael’s CEO Dr. Alan Sickles said. “Dr. Krause’s decades of expertise, innovative approach and proven leadership will greatly enhance the exceptional care we provide to our patients.”
In addition to his clinical expertise, Krause served as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps, demonstrating his dedication and leadership in both civilian and military medical fields. In 2020 he was deployed by the U.S. Navy Covid-19 Response team to serve as intensivist at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Queens, N.Y. which has been referred to the “epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis.”
Krause is a graduate of New York Medical College. He completed his general surgery training at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, N.Y., and UMDNJ in New Brunswick. He did his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center.
