What They Say: To improve patient outcomes during cardiac events, the cardiac care program at Saint Peter’s has incorporated the Impella device, a small heart pump that provides critical support for patients in cardiogenic shock following a heart attack. This minimally invasive device can be deployed rapidly, helping the heart when it struggles to circulate blood. It replicates natural blood flow, ensuring vital organs continue to receive oxygen during a cardiac event. By stabilizing the patient with oxygenated blood flow to vital organs, the Impella device gives physicians valuable time to treat the root cause of the heart attack, such as removing blockages in the coronary arteries.

New medications are also improving cardiovascular care by offering alternatives to traditional statins for cholesterol management with fewer side effects. Other drug advancements help better regulate chronic heart failure. As new drugs enter the consumer market, cardiologists are evaluating the role of weight loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro in reducing future cardiac risks.

Innovations in interventional cardiology such as advanced balloons and stents have also enhanced the ability to open completely blocked arteries. Additionally, using shockwave technology to break up calcified arterial plaques has made angioplasty and stenting procedures safer and more effective.

The state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab at Saint Peter’s offers advanced treatment options for individuals with heart conditions, including emergency and elective angioplasty procedures. Saint Peter’s offers a full spectrum of cardiology services including peripheral vascular angiograms; pacemaker implantation; treatment for congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, and cardiac arrhythmias; echocardiography (transthoracic and transesophageal); pharmacologic nuclear stress testing and exercise stress testing. Led by a team of interventional cardiologists, the lab is designed to provide optimal clinical outcomes with a focus on patient safety and compassionate care.
