RWJBarnabas Health celebrated a major milestone Tuesday with the grand opening of its largest academic ambulatory outpatient facility, a 15-story ambulatory medical pavilion located at 210 Somerset Street on the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) campus. The facility, opening to patients in April, will serve as a hub for top clinical experts from Rutgers Health, further strengthening New Jersey’s largest academic health system.
Designed to provide cutting-edge specialty care in a patient-centered setting, the pavilion will house experts in heart and vascular care, neuroscience, digestive care, gastroenterology, colorectal Surgery, plastic surgery, ear, nose and throat (ENT), and head and neck surgery. In addition, RWJUH’s non-Invasive cardiology and neurophysiology programs have relocated from the main hospital to the new facility, streamlining outpatient services.
A New Era for Outpatient Specialty Medicine
With floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping views of New Brunswick and the Manhattan skyline, the pavilion blends advanced medical technology with modern, patient-friendly design. Specialized procedural rooms provide an optimal environment for complex treatments, further elevating the quality of care available in an outpatient setting.
The facility is a direct result of the deepening partnership between RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Health, which has accelerated since the formation of New Jersey’s largest academic health system in 2017. In 2020, Rutgers Health clinicians joined the RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, making it one of the largest medical groups in the country.
Bill Arnold, CEO of RWJUH and Executive Vice President of RWJBarnabas Health, called the opening a “transformative moment” in the hospital’s commitment to specialized, patient-focused care.
“This facility is more than just a medical building—it’s a destination for patients with complex conditions who require expert care in an academic setting. With top specialists from Rutgers and state-of-the-art technology, we are setting a new standard for outpatient specialty care. Our investment in New Brunswick, including this pavilion and the soon-to-open Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, underscores our commitment to patient-centered, multidisciplinary medicine that benefits communities across New Jersey.”
Advancing Health care in New Brunswick
The project reflects New Brunswick’s growing reputation as a leading health care hub, a vision supported by city leadership.
Mayor James M. Cahill praised the pavilion’s role in expanding healthcare access:
“New Brunswick’s emergence as New Jersey’s premier health care city is the result of strong partnerships among institutions like RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers University, and our development partners. This facility brings the nation’s top medical experts into a world-class setting, ensuring our residents and patients across the region have access to the highest level of care.”
Dr. Amy Murtha, Dean of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, highlighted the pavilion’s impact on medical education:
“Our faculty now have a state-of-the-art setting to deliver evidence-based, compassionate care while training the next generation of health care providers. Residents, fellows, and medical students will benefit from hands-on learning in an advanced ambulatory environment.”
Enhanced Patient Experience and Cutting-Edge Infrastructure
The pavilion is equipped with a dedicated central sterile processing department, featuring the latest sterilization technology to maintain the highest standards of infection control.
Additional amenities include:
- A modern ground-floor lobby with a micro-café
- Direct connection to the 20 Plum Street municipal parking deck
- Valet parking at the building entrance
