As New Jersey prepares to host matches for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and FIFA World Cup 2026, Gov. Phil Murphy has signed legislation updating the state’s alcohol licensing framework to support major sporting events. The new law allows for specialized alcohol licenses at venues with more than 50,000 seats on public property, enhancing fan experiences while maintaining public safety.
The legislation permits up to five all-inclusive areas within licensed venues, each accommodating no more than 500 people or 5 percent of the stadium’s total capacity. This measure is expected to streamline operations at MetLife Stadium, which will host multiple FIFA matches, including the 2026 World Cup Final.
“With the world’s biggest sporting events on the horizon, we’re ensuring that New Jersey delivers an exceptional experience for fans while strengthening our economy,” said Gov. Murphy. The FIFA matches at MetLife Stadium are estimated to generate more than $2 billion in economic impact and support more than 14,000 jobs in the region.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Paul Sarlo and Assembly Members Clinton Calabrese and William F. Moen Jr., positions New Jersey as a top destination for future global sporting events.
