Solar Landscape, a leading U.S. commercial rooftop solar developer, has energized 14 new community solar projects across Maryland with a total capacity of 6.6 megawatts.
The installations are the first in a group of 57 rooftop projects the company is developing in the state. When fully operational, the portfolio will provide 55 megawatts (DC) of solar capacity, enough to power about 5,870 homes, making it the largest group of community solar projects by a single company in Maryland.
“Community solar projects like the ones we’ve energized create jobs, reduce energy costs and help Maryland meet its energy needs,” said Solar Landscape CEO and co-founder Shaun Keegan. “Putting large solar installations on commercial rooftops is a smart, shovel-ready energy solution that also pays dividends to building owners.”
The newly operational projects are located in Baltimore, Gaithersburg, Bel Air, Bethesda, Burtonsville, Dundalk, Owings Mills, Westminster and Woodlawn. The projects were interconnected by Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. and Pepco.
Commercial rooftop solar projects typically require 12 to 24 months for development and construction and do not use agricultural land or open space.
As part of its community solar work in Maryland, Solar Landscape partners with STEP-UP, a national workforce development nonprofit. In 2023, STEP-UP and Woodland Job Corps in Laurel hosted a three-day solar installation training. Another session is planned for later this year.
In 2024, Solar Landscape leased 40 million square feet of commercial rooftop space nationwide. The company’s pipeline of projects totals 500 megawatts, enough to power about 80,000 households. Its partners own more than 2 billion square feet of commercial real estate.
Solar Landscape, based in Asbury Park, New Jersey, was named the No. 1 Distributed Generation Developer of 2023 by New Project Media and received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Community Solar Grand Prize.
