NJ Transit has awarded a contract to Conduent Transportation to install state-of-the-art 3D fare gates at two of its busiest stations: Secaucus Junction and Newark Liberty International Airport. The move is part of a broader effort to modernize fare collection and improve reliability across the transit system.
The nearly 8-foot-tall gates use advanced sensors and imaging technology to enhance security and reduce fare evasion. Under the agreement, Conduent will install 72 gates in total, with the option for NJ Transit to expand the technology to additional stations.
The new gates build on NJ Transit’s five-year contract with Conduent, signed in 2024, to implement and enhance a contactless fare collection system.
“We’re honored to expand our relationship with NJ Transit with their adoption of our 3D Fare Gate Solution,” said Adam Appleby, group president of public sector solutions at Conduent. “This innovative technology modernizes fare collection and helps ensure fair access to a transit system that benefits the entire region.”
The deal follows a similar contract Conduent signed with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) last year to install 100 gates across nine stations in the Philadelphia area. That agreement came after a successful pilot program that combined the new gates with increased enforcement, leading to higher fare revenue.
Conduent’s 3D fare gates are also used by Transilien SNCF in Paris. The company has provided mobility services and fare collection technology in more than 20 countries during the past five decades.
