St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center, part of the St. Joseph’s Health system, has opened a new Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbarics to provide advanced care for patients with chronic or non-healing wounds.
The outpatient facility includes two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, making it one of the few centers in the region to offer this form of therapy. The treatment uses pressurized oxygen to help damaged tissue heal, stimulate blood vessel growth, and enhance immune cell function.
“Offering the latest healing technology allows us to aggressively treat wounds that haven’t responded to conventional care,” said Michael Cairoli, vice president and chief operating officer of St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center. “Our focus is on improving outcomes and restoring quality of life.”
The multidisciplinary team includes specialists in general, vascular and plastic surgery, podiatry, infectious disease, and certified wound care nurses and technicians. The center provides personalized treatment plans that address both the wound and any underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes or poor circulation.
“Since non-healing wounds rarely have a single cause, our approach is comprehensive,” said Dr. Scott Wessner, medical director of the new center. “We treat the whole person—not just the wound—to support full recovery.”
According to the American College of Surgeons, more than 6.5 million Americans suffer from chronic wounds each year.
