On May 14, ROI-NJ hosted a discussion at Galloping Hill Country Club focused on the challenges faced by members of the “Sandwich Generation” — those balancing care for aging loved ones with raising children and managing careers.
The panel featured Melissa Skrocki, a shareholder at Giordano, Halleran & Ciesla; Kirthi Mani, chief people officer at CliftonLarsonAllen; and Dr. Jessica Israel, chief medical officer and chief innovation officer at Complete Care. The conversation was candid, with each speaker sharing personal experiences that highlighted their different family dynamics but common struggles.
Both Skrocki and Mani discussed the emotional and logistical demands of caring for aging parents while supporting their children, careers and communities. While acknowledging that managing all these responsibilities can feel overwhelming, they offered strategies to navigate the stress and stay resilient.
Key advice included seeking flexible career opportunities, asking for help, making time for self-rejuvenation, sticking to a daily schedule and creating realistic meal plans. The speakers emphasized the importance of letting go of guilt — recognizing that it’s OK not to do everything perfectly and forgiving oneself when falling short.
As Dr. Israel wrapped up the discussion, she offered final words of encouragement: “Remember, you’re doing the best you can — and don’t hold yourself to impossible standards.”
