New Jersey Society of CPAs names Szczomak president

The New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA) said John M. Szczomak, a member of the Fairfield firm Smolin, Lupin & Co., was named president for the 2025-26 term. Szczomak replaced June M. Toth, principal at WilkinGuttenplan, on June 1.

As NJCPA president, Szczomak plans to focus on the CPA pipeline challenges and encourage more people to enter accounting as well as mentoring the younger generation. “The more people put time into mentoring, the better our profession will be,” he said.

Szczomak has been a member of the NJCPA since 1990. He has participated with the bankers and healthcare committee, financial services resource group and accounting and auditing standards interest group. Szczomak served as NJCPA trustee, treasurer and secretary as well as a New Jersey CPA political action committee trustee, on the Essex chapter board and as an NJCPA scholarship fund trustee.

Szczomak has been at Smolin for more than 38 years, after interning there and graduating from William Paterson University in Wayne. In his current capacity, Szczomak and his team handle high-net-worth, healthcare, retail and professional services, concentrating primarily on tax.

He is also on the board of the Fighting Children’s Cancer Foundation and chair of the Finance Committee at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Paterson. Szczomak was past president of the New Jersey State Elks Association. He resides in Totowa with his wife, Jody.

“We are pleased to welcome John as president and are very excited by his enthusiasm to connect with younger professionals and inform them about this great profession,” said Aiysha (AJ) Johnson, executive director at the NJCPA. “Mentoring is important in all fields, but it is particularly needed in accounting to explain the many opportunities that are available to CPAs.”
