Lidl building on N.J. presence by opening store in Hackensack

Lidl, the discount grocery store chain, will open a supermarket at 150 River St. in Hackensack July 25. Its official ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 7:40 a.m. and the store will officially open at 8 a.m.

The site of the future store is the former headquarters building for The Record newspaper. 

The Hackensack store will be Bergen County’s fourth Lidl, with locations in Paramus, Bergenfield, and Elmwood Park. The discount grocer has more than 20 locations in the Garden State.

Lidl’s strategy is to push more deeply into the New Jersey suburbs. Lidl is competing in the discount grocery store space with another German chain, Aldi, which has embarked on an aggressive store rollout campaign.

As part of its plans, Lidl is offering more exclusive products such as its Butcher’s Specialty private label meat brand. It features its Special Guest bakery program introducing one new baked good every month.  

Lidl US opened its first American store in 2017 and now operates more than 180 stores across the East Coast. The German grocer is part of Schwarz Group, operates more than 12,000 stores and is active in 31 countries, employing more than 360,000 employees globally.
