Morristown Medical Center completes last phase of modernization project

Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center recently completed the final phase of its Sameth Emergency Department expansion and modernization project.

The newly renovated space includes 12 new patient rooms, 12 new low acuity bays, two new nursing and physician stations, an electrocardiogram room as well as three new private triage rooms in the emergency department (ED) waiting area. The total estimated cost of the project was $26.9 million.

Morristown Medical Center’s patient volume continues to increase as the population of the surrounding towns, county, and tri-state region grows. Morris County’s population grew 2.7% to 523,053 in 2024 from 509,294, according U.S. Census data. Morris is the fourth-fastest growing county in the state.

In 2024, the Morristown Medical Center’s ED cared for more than 110,000 patients – one of the highest numbers in the state, according to the health-care provider. Throughout every phase of construction, the ED and hospital remained fully operational.

When the ED expansion project started in early 2022, the ED had 78 treatment areas – now there are 120. The project also resulted in an upgrade to the latest technology, specialized treatment areas, triage, intake, behavioral health, and improvements in both its adult and pediatric emergency care departments.

The demand for expanding and modernizing Morristown Medical Center’s ED became apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a designated Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the hospital’s ED treated more than 100,000 patients in 2022, among the highest in New Jersey.

“We approached this project with the goal to improve the experience of our patients and their loved ones, while creating a space that meets the needs of our community and our team members,” said Trish O’Keefe, president, Morristown Medical Center.
