RVCC approves new strategic plan for 2025-2030

The Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) board of trustees has approved a new strategic plan, “2025-2030 Strategic Plan: Leading Change, Inspiring Possibility,” focusing on six themes.

“As many students move away from traditional academic pathways and require additional support systems and essential career skills — while conventional funding sources decline — it’s vital the college not only accepts change but also embraces it,” said RVCC President Michael J. McDonough.

In September 2024, a strategic planning committee was formed representing all constituencies of the RVCC community, including students and the board of trustees. Throughout the fall, the committee hosted numerous focus groups and requested electronic survey feedback to discover relevant themes that represent RVCC’s collective goals for the future.

Presentations were then made to the college community and at board of trustees’ strategy and vision committee meetings throughout the spring, in conjunction with the strategic planning committee’s biweekly gatherings, to develop plan details based on constituent comments and to provide updates. Additional feedback was collected during and after each presentation, resulting in the final strategic plan presented in May 2025.

The final plan focuses on six themes that will direct RVCC’s resources for the next five years. Each includes a goal and strategic priorities to help achieve it:

Theme 1: Student Success & Academic Excellence

Goal: Elevate learning outcomes and academic achievement through innovative support systems and transformative, high-impact educational practices.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Empower student success through enhanced academic support that energizes recruitment, boosts retention and drives completion.
  • Promote teaching and learning excellence with evidence-based, forward-thinking approaches that inspire inclusive, innovative classrooms.
  • Explore opportunities for expanding relationships with K-12 schools.
  • Expand real-world readiness via dynamic experiential learning and career-aligned pathways tailored to student goals and industry needs.
  • Implement an exceptional onboarding experience that launches students with clarity, connection and confidence.

Theme 2: Workforce & Economic Development

Goal: Create agile, responsive education and training pathways that align with the evolving needs of industry — equipping students with the tools to thrive in tomorrow’s workforce.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Embed essential career skills across the curriculum to ensure graduates are not just ready but in demand.
  • Align programs with regional economic drivers by forging strong public-private partnerships and responding to market shifts.
  • Empower students to shape their futures through flexible, goal-driven pathways that support personal ambition and regional economic growth.

Theme 3: Access & Affordability

Goal: Break down barriers to the highest quality, affordable education so every learner — regardless of background — can achieve academic and career success.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Deepen support systems that help students from all walks of life thrive academically and personally.
  • Pursue bold financial strategies to reduce cost burdens and expand access through innovative funding, housing, transportation and scholarship opportunities.
  • Advocate for extending degree programs beyond the associate degree level.
  • Deliver flexible learning options that adapt to real life — meeting students where they are, on their schedule.

Theme 4: Community Engagement & Partnership

Goal: Position RVCC as a vibrant and essential community resource through meaningful partnerships, shared spaces and local impact.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Maximize usage of campus spaces as dynamic hubs for community events, business collaborations and cultural engagement.
  • Grow strategic alliances with businesses, nonprofits and agencies to expand service learning, internships and research.
  • Reinforce alumni connections to foster mentorship, storytelling, professional growth and philanthropic engagement.
  • Enhance athletic and recreational facilities to serve as a regional destination for sports and wellness.

Theme 5: Infrastructure, Technology & Environmental Stewardship

Goal: Future-proof the college through sustainable practices, advanced technology and resilient, forward-thinking infrastructure.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Lead with sustainability by embedding environmentally responsible practices within educational experiences and every aspect of campus operations.
  • Build a campus that inspires — blending functionality, innovation, aesthetics and community in every space.
  • Invest in emerging technology to elevate both learning and operational excellence in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Theme 6: Institutional Culture

Goal: Foster an inclusive, collaborative and purpose-driven culture that drives institutional excellence and personal fulfillment.

Strategic Priorities:

  • Advance organizational efficiency and effectiveness through a commitment to integrated planning utilizing data-informed and value-based decision-making.
  • Strengthen transparency and collaboration across the college to promote shared governance and cohesive communication.
  • Encourage growth and innovation by embracing curiosity, reflection and bold, responsible experimentation.
  • Celebrate contributions across all roles — uplifting the people who power our mission.
  • Prioritize well-being through policies that promote a sustainable, balanced approach to work and life.

“Raritan Valley Community College’s new strategic plan focuses on our commitment to student success through the enhancement of academic, community and corporate partnerships; an investment in resources to keep pace with a changing workforce; and an obligation to deliver an affordable, accessible education to help transform our inspiring students’ lives,” said President McDonough.
