Jefferson Washington Township Hospital adopts groundbreaking portable MRI system

Jefferson Washington Township Hospital has become the first hospital nationwide to utilize a new FDA-cleared AI-powered portable MRI system. This groundbreaking acquisition enables more accessible, efficient and higher-quality advanced brain imaging directly at the patient’s bedside.

The new Swoop system from Hyperfine features innovations specifically engineered to provide improved performance. The combination of the latest hardware and Hyperfine’s proprietary AI software provides a transformative improvement in image quality, improves ease of use and supports broader clinical applications — elevating the portable MRI experience for both clinicians and patients.

“We are excited to be the first hospital in the country to implement this breakthrough technology,” said Jenny Breunig, vice president of operations at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital. “We anticipate that being able to perform diagnostic brain imaging at the bedside will shorten the time from admission to discharge, facilitating elevated patient care and optimizing our resources.”

Traditionally, performing an MRI on intensive care unit (ICU) patients involves a complex process: coordinating a transport team of two to four staff members to move the patient, along with vital life-sustaining devices such as respirators, IV lines, tubes, and medication, outside the ICU and into a conventional MRI suite. The new technology revolutionizes this by bringing advanced brain imaging directly to the bedside, providing cost savings and improving patient safety.

This patient-centric design delivers functionality, easy usability and the highest level of image quality on a portable MRI. Its open layout is especially beneficial for a broad patient population, including pediatric, older adult, anxious patients and patients who cannot receive a traditional MRI, significantly improving their comfort and experience. Furthermore, the portable MRI system allows clinical staff and loved ones to safely remain at the patient’s bedside during imaging.

This technology will be used at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital in the emergency department and intensive care unit settings.
