New Jersey American Water revamping Union infrastructure

New Jersey American Water (NJAW) is set to replace over half of a mile of aging cast iron water main in Union starting this month.

The company will upgrade water lines that were installed in the 1950s with new 8-inch ductile iron main along the following streets:

  • Broadwell Avenue (from Salem Road to Colonial Avenue)
  • Beverly Road (from Arnet Avenue to Lorraine Avenue)
  • Lorraine Avenue (from Summit Place to Lum Avenue)

The project also includes replacing fire hydrants and utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route. NJAW will replace any customer-owned service line that has been identified as lead or galvanized as part of a statewide plan to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.

This $1.3 million investment will continue to advance water service reliability and increase water flows for household consumption and fire. This improvement is part of NJAW’s initiative to fast-track the renewal of water infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life in more than 100 communities across New Jersey.

Conquest, an NJAW qualified contractor, will begin work the week of Sept. 8th and expects to be completed by the end of the month. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Work outside of these hours is not expected unless necessary to maintain project schedule. Final street restorations will take place by Spring 2026.

Project timelines are subject to change due to a variety of factors, such as weather and availability of supplies.

For safety purposes, traffic restrictions and/or alternating traffic patterns are likely to occur during work hours. All emergency vehicles and local traffic will be allowed access during construction.
