New Jersey American Water invests $2M in Bernardsville infrastructure

New Jersey American Water is replacing over half of a mile of aging cast iron water main in Bernardsville, which started in September.

This is part of a $2 million investment that will continue to advance water service reliability and increase water flows for household consumption and fire protection.

The company will upgrade water lines, which were installed in the 1950s, with 8- and 12-inch ductile iron main along the following streets: Boylan Terrace entire length; Center Street from Boylan Terrace to Bernards Avenue; Mount Airy Road from Prospect Street to Boylan Terrance; Prospect Street from West Street to Mount Airy Road; and West Street from Boylan Terrace to Bernards Avenue.

The project also includes replacing fire hydrants and utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route. New Jersey American Water also will replace any customer-owned service line that has been identified as lead or galvanized as part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.

This improvement is part of New Jersey American Water’s multimillion-dollar initiative to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life in more than 100 communities across the state.

New Jersey American Water’s contractor, CRJ Construction of Somerville, will begin work the week of Sept. 29 and expects to be completed by the end of December 2025. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday on all streets except Mount Airy Road, which will take place overnight, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Work outside of these hours is not expected unless required to maintain the project’s schedule.

Final street restorations will take place by spring of 2026. Project timelines are subject to change due to a variety of factors including weather and availability of supplies.
