Quinnipiac University N.J. sports poll says most fans don’t want name changes for Giants, Jets

A new Quinnipiac University poll indicates most New Jersey sports fans don’t want to change the names of the New York Giants and New York Jets even though both teams have played in New Jersey for decades. The Giants started playing in New Jersey in 1976 and the Jets came to the Garden State in 1984.

Nearly six in 10 NFL fans in the Garden State (59%) say they think that the two teams should continue to be named the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Nearly three in 10 NFL fans in New Jersey (29%) say the teams should be renamed. Maybe fans don’t want the state’s name tied to two losers – the Giants have won two of seven games this year while the Jets are winless in seven games.

Sixty-four percent of NFL fans in New Jersey say the Giants could have a shot at making the playoffs within the next five years, 20% of fans say it could happen in five to 10 years, 5% say it will take more than a decade, and 4% say it will probably never happen again for the Giants. The Giants last made the playoffs in 2022. They’ve played in five Super Bowls and won four.

One third of NFL fans in the Garden State (33%) say the Jets could have a shot at making the playoffs within the next five years, 31% say it could happen in five to 10 years, 11% say it will take more than a decade, and 16% say it will probably never happen again for the Jets. The Jets last made the playoffs in 2010. They won their lone Super Bowl in 1969.

Thirty-one percent of New Jersey football fans say the Giants are their favorite team, followed by the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (24%) and the Jets (11%).
