MD Anderson at Cooper Surgical oncologist Atabek gets national award for outstanding cancer care leadership

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper said Oct. 28 that Dr. Umur Atabek, a surgical oncologist, has been recognized as a 2025 Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award winner by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Atabek is among only 10 cancer liaison physicians nationwide to receive this honor in 2025. The award highlights his commitment to improving cancer care quality, advancing clinical outcomes  and supporting patients and families throughout their cancer journey.

“I’m grateful to work alongside such a skilled and compassionate team,” said Atabek. “Every day, our goal is to deliver the best possible treatment along with compassion, support and hope.”

Cancer liaison physicians serve as critical links between their cancer programs and the Commission on Cancer, using data-driven insights to promote quality improvement and patient-centered care.

“Dr. Atabek’s recognition reflects his steadfast leadership and dedication to advancing cancer care in our region,” said Dr. Generosa Grana, director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. “His work embodies the mission of MD Anderson at Cooper — to provide innovative and personalized cancer care close to home.”
