Valley Health System announced Oct. 29 that Dr. Eric Lazar, chair of Surgical Services for Valley Medical Group and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program, in partnership with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has been reappointed as governor-at-large to the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons. This will be Lazar’s second term.
Lazar will serve a three-year term on the board. As governor at large, he serves as the direct communication link between the fellows of the college and the members of the board of governors.
“I am honored to have been reappointed as Governor-at-Large to serve the ACS for another term,” says Dr. Lazar. “The American College of Surgeons is globally the foremost authority on surgical quality and care. That a Valley physician is representing New Jersey at an executive level nationally is an important recognition of the quality of surgical care that Valley represents.”
The ACS Board of Governors is the representative body of the ACS. Those on the Board bring forward the voices and views of surgical colleagues and develop resources to support Fellows, according to its website.
ACS is dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care in an optional and ethical practice environment. There are approximately 90,000 members worldwide, with over 2,500 hospital participants in ACS quality programs.
Lazar is a pediatric surgeon who is board certified in general and pediatric surgery. He specializes in newborn congenital anomalies, medical emergencies and routine surgical care. Lazar also helped launch and has leadership responsibilities for the new general surgery residency program, which welcomed its first class in July 2025.
