Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been declared the winner of New Jersey’s gubernatorial race, according to The Associated Press, ending a six-decade streak in which no party has held the governor’s office for more than two consecutive terms.
The Associated Press declared Sherrill the winner at 9:23 p.m. Tuesday.
Sherrill, a four-term congresswoman, defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a three-time gubernatorial candidate.
Throughout her campaign, Sherrill focused on addressing the state’s high cost of living. She pledged to declare a state of emergency on utility costs on her first day in office, freezing electricity rates while working to reduce them over time. Her administration is expected to emphasize economic growth, infrastructure improvement and support for local businesses.
Sherrill will succeed Gov. Phil Murphy, a fellow Democrat who is term-limited after serving since 2018. Her running mate, Dr. Dale Caldwell, president of Centenary University, will serve as lieutenant governor. Sherrill’s term begins in mid-January.
A Montclair resident and former Navy helicopter pilot, Sherrill has represented the 11th Congressional District since 2019, covering parts of Morris, Essex and Passaic counties. Her election to the governor’s office will open her congressional seat in 2026.
