The Alliance for Data Privacy and Security Inc. was launched recently as a nonprofit to promote data privacy and security through public education, policy advocacy and community-driven initiatives.
The 501(c)(4) organization will bolster advocacy for Daniel’s Law through education and awareness initiatives on a national scale using contributions from proceeds of New Jersey lawsuits filed against noncompliant data brokers by Atlas Data Privacy Corporation.
Daniel’s Law allows judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers and eligible family members to request that data brokers not disclose their home addresses and unpublished home telephone numbers.
The law helps ensure the privacy, safety and security of public servants, who are increasingly being targeted with threats and acts of violence. It was enacted in 2020 following the tragic murder of Judge Esther Salas’ son, Daniel Anderl, at her home by a disgruntled litigant.
The Alliance’s 501(c)(4) formation follows several lawsuits filed by Atlas since February 2024, claiming that data brokers did not comply with requests from about 20,000 New Jersey covered persons since late 2023.
While the data broker industry has raised multiple arguments to shield their profits, Atlas has agreed to invest millions of dollars of litigation proceeds to support the Alliance’s work while continuing to defend Daniel’s Law and protect New Jersey’s judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officers and their families.
“The formation of the Alliance for Data Privacy and Security marks a major step forward in protecting public servants’ personal information nationwide,” said Matt Adkisson, president of Atlas Data Privacy. “We’re turning accountability into action, ensuring that privacy protections extend beyond New Jersey and become a national standard by using litigation proceeds to support the Alliance’s critical mission.”
The goals of the organization include:
- Educating the public on data privacy and security through digital campaigns, workshops, webinars and publications.
- Publication of a research report regarding the efficacy of New Jersey’s Daniel’s Law in effectuating privacy and security for public servants.
- Advocating for privacy-forward policies by engaging with lawmakers, submitting public comments and supporting legislation that protects personal data.
- Empowering communities to take control of their digital rights through grassroots organizing and partnerships with civic groups.
“We believe the Alliance for Data Privacy and Security will be an invaluable tool in the ongoing efforts to educate the public and other lawmakers across the country on the importance of allowing for individual privacy,” said N.J. State Senators Joe Cryan and Vin Gopal, and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano.
“We look forward to helping this new organization achieve its mission to ensure the privacy and safety of at-risk public servants.”
