Only 1 N.J. hospital makes Becker’s 2018 ‘100 Great Community Hospitals’ list

Overlook Medical Center, part of the Atlantic Health System, was the only New Jersey hospital to be named on Becker’s Healthcare‘s 2018 list of 100 Great Community Hospital, it announced recently.

Becker’s is a business and legal information source for health care industry leaders. The list includes hospitals that were recognized for their clinical quality, operational excellence and economic impact on its surrounding areas. Becker defines a community hospital as a facility with no more than 550 beds.

“As Overlook has steadily enhanced its clinical expertise and is now recognized in the region for its high-quality care, we’ve remained committed to our role as the caregiver for our communities, working every day both inside and outside the hospital to make them healthier,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center.

Summit-based Overlook is a 504-bed hospital and provider of specialty services, including neuroscience and digestive diseases care.  In addition to its Summit location, it also has a location in Union and offers wellness and health improvement at Overlook Downtown, a storefront location in Summit. Overlook operates the “Healthy Avenues Van”, a mobile unit that serves 21 towns in Union County, providing screenings and education.

Becker’s “100 great community hospitals 2018” list includes independent community hospitals as well as facilities affiliated with large health systems. Some hospitals serve expansive rural geographies, while others care for small communities outside of large cities. The hospitals continue to grow in many communities, opening new departments and sites to improve access to care.
