120 restaurants to get grants ($2,500-$5,000) in DoorDash program

One hundred twenty restaurants in New Jersey will get grants of $2,500 or $5,000 through a COVID-19 relief program funded by DoorDash, administered by the New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association and supported by the Governor’s Office, the groups announced Tuesday.

The list of restaurants is at the bottom of this story.

The grants, which can be used to pay rent, purchase cold-weather equipment, personal protective equipment and more, are part of DoorDash’s five-year, $200 million Main Street Strong Pledge, which includes a $10 million effort to help restaurants in cities and states around the country and Canada. Checks were to be mailed Tuesday.

Gov. Phil Murphy said the state is grateful for the assistance.

“I want to thank DoorDash and the New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association for their efforts to come to the aid of our restaurant community in this time of need,” he said. “It is my hope that, with the help of this program and others instituted by my administration, that our restaurants will weather the storm and once again thrive when we emerge on the other side of this pandemic.”

More than 400 applications were submitted. A committee comprised of Marilou Halvorsen and Leslie Steele (NJRHA), Linda Doherty (New Jersey Food Council) and Lori Ehlbeck (formerly of NFIB) reviewed the applications and made the final selection based on the criteria on the applications.

“It was heartbreaking to see the number of applicants who need these funds, but we appreciate DoorDash’s commitment to our industry to help in their time of need,” Halvorsen said.

David London, director of government relations, U.S. East, for DoorDash, said the company was glad it could help out in a time of need.

“DoorDash was founded to empower local economies, and we know New Jersey’s restaurants are core to so many communities throughout the state,” he said. “We’re proud to fund these grants, and partner with the New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association to ensure we can support restaurants who need it most. We know these are challenging times for restaurant owners, and we’re committed to doing our part to help.”

DoorDash’s recent Economic Impact Report revealed the following:

  • Nearly 66% of restaurants say they were able to increase their profits during COVID-19 because of DoorDash;
  • 75% of restaurants agree that DoorDash has allowed them to reach new customers;
  • 69% of restaurants say they have acquired new dine-in customers through DoorDash.

Additionally, the odds of staying open during COVID-19 are eight times more likely for restaurants on DoorDash.
