Innovative breast cancer care at Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care

The Breast Center team at Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care provides a full spectrum of breast health services, from diagnosis to treatment to survivorship. As part of the team’s commitment to improving patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes, it strives to introduce new treatment technologies and clinical offerings as well as detailed and personalized treatment plans.

Diagnosis

The Valley Breast Center is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Valley’s Breast Imaging Center provides imaging tests to screen for breast cancer, including screening 3D mammograms, breast ultrasound and breast magnetic resonance imaging.

As part of Valley’s commitment to offering the latest technology, the team has adopted the SmartCurve Breast Stabilization System, which is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable mammogram without compromising image quality. The SmartCurve system features a proprietary curved surface that mirrors the shape of a woman’s breast to reduce pinching and allow better distribution of force over the entire breast.

The SmartCurve system is FDA-approved and a part of Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography exam, which also includes Clarity HD high-resolution 3D imaging technology. This entire system detects more invasive cancers and reduces false positives, compared to conventional 2D mammography for all women, including those with dense breasts.

To schedule a mammogram or other breast imaging, please call 201-447-8600, option 2, or schedule online at ValleyHealth.com/Mammography.

Treatment

Valley’s Breast Center team has expertise in treating all breast cancers, including rare and complex breast cancers such as triple-negative and metastatic breast cancer, as well as cancers in young women.

Chemotherapy may be recommended as part of treatment. Our team understands that, for some patients undergoing chemotherapy, hair loss can be a traumatic side effect. That is why our team offers the Paxman Scalp Cooling System, designed to help prevent hair loss, to a subset of patients. Scalp cooling is a simple, noninvasive process in which the temperature of the scalp is reduced to minimize the chemotherapeutic agents’ effect on the hair follicles. Scalp cooling is for those with solid cancer tumors receiving alopecia-inducing chemotherapy drugs.

If surgery is recommended as a treatment, Valley’s breast surgeons use advanced oncoplastic techniques that combine traditional oncologic surgery with established plastic surgery practices. This innovative approach allows for superior cosmetic results.

Additionally, our team of breast surgeons offers patients the most advanced options for breast reconstruction and breast procedures, including breast-preserving lumpectomy (where the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed), breast seed localization (a better way to precisely pinpoint small breast tumors or abnormal breast tissue, as well as being a patient-friendly approach), nipple-sparing mastectomy (where the breast tissue is removed, while all of the skin and the nipple and areola are left intact), immediate reconstruction following mastectomy, and an oncoplastic surgery team for optimal cosmetic results.

Survivorship

Survivorship begins on the day of diagnosis, although patients may receive treatment for their cancer over a long period of time. In addition to health issues, cancer survivors face mental health, reproductive, social, employment, financial concerns and more.

At Valley, our team has created a program dedicated to your survivorship needs. Once a patient finishes active treatment, they will continue to visit us through the Survivorship and Health Interventions in Nutrition and Exercise, or SHINE, survivorship program for ongoing surveillance and support.

The program is designed to empower patients to live their healthiest lifestyle after treatment. Focusing on nutrition, exercise, and community, the program provides education and referrals to related subspecialists to improve health outcomes and decrease cancer risk.
