Heart of Camden celebrates 40th anniversary with $500K grant from the NJ DCA

The Heart of Camden, together with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Camden City’s Mayor, and funding partners Subaru, Columbia Bank, and PNC Bank, recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a $500,000 investment in revitalization efforts for the Camden Waterfront South neighborhood.

The money awarded will be used to implement Heart of Camden’s Catch the Wave: Waterfront South Neighborhood Plan. This investment will benefit Heart of Camden’s programs for the Waterfront South neighborhood and the children and families in this community.

Founded in 1984 by the late Monsignor Michael Doyle, the Heart of Camden has revitalized the Waterfront South community into a neighborhood of choice with access to the waterfront, community gardens, over 200 new and rehabilitated homes, a state-of-the-art gym and community center, and direct youth and family services.

“Heart of Camden has played a vital role in transforming the Waterfront South neighborhood,” Camden Mayor, Victor Carstarphen, said. “Through their dedication to affordable housing, arts, and community development, they have not only rebuilt homes but strengthened families and the fabric of our community. As Camden continues to grow, organizations like the Heart of Camden are essential partners in building a stronger future for all our residents.

“Heart of Camden has transformed our neighborhood, providing over 250 homes for families, creating vibrant public spaces, and fostering a deep sense of community,” Carlos Morales, executive director, said. “This event honors the past and inspires our future efforts to ensure that Camden remains a place of opportunity, hope, and growth.”

The Heart of Camden is a nonprofit organization that seeks to enhance the quality of life of the South Camden community through programs for housing restoration, economic expansions, and community development.
