Noteworthy: New Jersey’s only heart transplant program, and among the nation’s largest; the nation’s fourth-largest amyloid program; New Jersey’s largest collective structural heart and interventional stroke program; 30-plus cardiac catheterization labs; overall, the most comprehensive network of cardiac diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic technology offerings in the state; New Jersey’s most comprehensive academic health system in partnership with Rutgers University.

What They Say: One of our most impactful advancements has been realizing the return on our investment in our Epic electronic medical record system to improve clinical decision-making, patient safety and care coordination. Since our final site went live in October, we have focused on the optimization of Epic to enhance patient scheduling, reduce hospital readmissions, and implement critical safety measures. For example, in our critical-care settings, our team designed an initiative that demonstrated that automated alerts to providers’ handheld devices support early extubation protocols and high-risk patient management, helping prevent complications before they arise.

Another significant advancement is the integration of point-of-care ultrasound, which enables clinicians to assess heart function in real time at the patient’s bedside. POCUS eliminates diagnostic delays, allowing for faster, more informed decision-making in emergent cardiac situations.

Notably, RWJBarnabas Health operates New Jersey’s largest Advanced Heart Failure program, as well as the state’s only heart transplant program. Our technologies in heart failure interventions include the most complex surgical left ventricular assist devices, as well as a minimally invasive procedure that allows remote monitoring of patients who are at high risk of heart failure exacerbations. Our 30-plus cardiac catheterization labs and cardiac surgical operating rooms provide the most comprehensive cardiovascular care in the state, allowing such innovative technologies to be available not only at our major academic centers but also throughout our Heart and Vascular network.

Additionally, our structural heart program is the largest in New Jersey and New York, advancing minimally invasive procedures that improve outcomes.

“By combining advanced technology with a strong focus on patient safety and outcomes, RWJBarnabas Health continues to set new standards in cardiac care, ensuring patients have access to cutting-edge treatments across New Jersey.” — Dr. Conor Barrett, senior vice president and chief clinical officer for heart and vascular services, RWJBarnabas Health.
