Bridging the Gap: Investing in experiential learning

Saint Peter’s partners with Lord Abbett to teach students financial sector skills

In 2020, Saint Peter’s University established a strategic partnership with investment management firm Lord Abbett & Co., LLC to launch the University’s first Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF). This collaboration was designed to provide finance and economics students with real-world investment experience, bridging the gap between classroom learning and the financial industry.

With an initial $50,000 in funding from Lord Abbett, students actively manage a live investment portfolio, applying financial theories to real-time decision-making. Participants are selected annually and take co-requisite courses in Investment Analysis and Financial Statement Analysis, ensuring a strong academic foundation. The success of their investments is measured against industry benchmarks, reinforcing a results-driven approach.

Beyond financial support, Lord Abbett plays a critical role in student development, offering mentorship, career engagement and training opportunities. Investment professionals from the firm serve as guest speakers, sharing insights into financial markets and career pathways. Additionally, Saint Peter’s Office of Career Engagement and Experiential Learning (CEEL) facilitates internship and career-related events as part of the partnership, expanding students’ professional networks.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond the classroom. The SMIF enhances Saint Peter’s reputation in business education, attracting high-caliber students interested in finance and wealth management. It also benefits the local community by fostering a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to Jersey City’s growing financial sector.

This partnership has also led to direct career opportunities, as Lord Abbett has hired Saint Peter’s students involved in the SMIF, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in preparing graduates for success in the financial industry. It also aligns with Lord Abbett’s commitment to investing in talent and fostering economic empowerment.

This collaboration exemplifies Saint Peter’s dedication to experiential learning and career readiness. By combining academic rigor with hands-on experience and industry mentorship, the SMIF equips students with the skills, confidence, and professional connections necessary to excel in the financial industry.
