Plainfield’s Recreational & Cultural Center of Excellence celebrates groundbreaking

Plainfield announced the renovation of the historic Plainfield YMCA, located at Watchung Avenue and 5th Street, into a state-of-the-art 55,000-square-foot arts and cultural hub named the Plainfield Recreational & Cultural Center of Excellence.

This transformative project, led by the development partnership of SK Development and On Collab, designed by Think Wilder Architecture under the leadership of Principal Stephen Wilder, will breathe new life into the cherished landmark, fostering creativity, wellness and community engagement.

The Center of Excellence will feature expansive spaces dedicated to promoting, teaching and enhancing arts and culture in the Plainfield area. It will also include a competition-size swimming pool and a full-service exercise facility. From studios for visual and performing arts to classrooms and community gathering spaces, the facility will serve as a dynamic hub for residents of all ages to explore and celebrate artistic expression and healthy living.

“The Recreational & Cultural Center of Excellence is a direct result of listening to the voices of Plainfield residents, parents, young people, seniors, artists and athletes, who have long expressed the need for a true community space that reflects their needs, their dreams and their creative aspirations. This project is borne from those conversations, and it is deeply gratifying to see it come to life,” said Plainfield Mayor Adrian O. Mapp. “This is leadership through listening. We didn’t just hear our residents, we acted. And now, we’re delivering a space that will inspire creativity, promote wellness and build stronger connections in our community for years to come.”

“This project honors the legacy of the Plainfield YMCA while creating a dynamic space that will inspire and uplift the community,” said Scott Shnay from SK Development. “The Recreational & Cultural Center of Excellence will be a beacon for cultural enrichment and wellness in Plainfield.”

“We’re honored to help reimagine this landmark as a beacon of cultural enrichment and healthy living, where Plainfield residents of all ages can come together to learn, create and thrive,” said J. Wayman Henry from On Collab. “With construction set to begin in 2026, we look forward to delivering a dynamic space that honors Plainfield’s heritage while shaping its future.”

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Recreational & Cultural Center of Excellence will take place on June 2.
