Steeplechase Cancer Center Somerset expands medical oncology services

Newly renovated outpatient office suite doubles center’s infusion capacity

The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset recently unveiled a newly renovated outpatient office suite, which expands medical oncology and infusion services, enhances the patient experience and positions the center for continued growth. Together with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the center provides the latest cancer treatment options close to home, including clinical trials.

The renovated space expands capacity and focuses on patient comfort and convenience by increasing the size and number of exam rooms and doubling the size of the waiting room to ensure better patient flow.

The new office also features a dedicated space for patients who are receiving scalp cooling therapy to help prevent hair loss. Additionally, the renovation has enabled the cancer center to double its infusion capacity for services that include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products and other IV therapies.

The renovation marks the continued evolution of the Steeplechase Cancer Center, which was established at RWJUH Somerset in 2007 to make cancer care more convenient for patients, providing access to various subspecialists, such as medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists and radiation oncologists all in one location.

Dr. Kathleen Toomey, who serves as the medical director at Steeplechase Cancer Center and regional director of oncology services for RWJBarnabas Health, has been treating oncology patients for over three decades. She is accompanied by medical oncologists Dr. Faye Yin, specializing in gynecology and breast oncology, and Dr. Eshan Patel, specializing in cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and thoracic oncology, who are all part of the multidisciplinary oncology team including specially trained and nationally certified infusion nurses to provide the most comprehensive oncology care.

“Our newly renovated outpatient space allows us to bring patients multidisciplinary comprehensive oncology services close to home,” Toomey said. “The space was designed with optimized patient care in mind, making it even easier to provide access to the latest treatments, our expert staff and a wide array of services all within the welcoming, compassionate environment patients have come to expect from the Steeplechase Cancer Center.”
