Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway introduces robotic surgery system

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway recently added the da Vinci X Surgical System, a robotic minimally invasive surgery technology, to enhance surgical capabilities, maintaining the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality care and the latest technology to patients in Union County and surrounding communities.

“The introduction and investment in robotic technology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway is a significant milestone in our commitment to transform care for the residents of Union County,” Kirk Tice, CEO and president, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway, said. “We are excited about the positive impact the da Vinci X brings to our hospital and the enhancement it offers our surgeons to expand the range of minimally invasive surgical capabilities which benefits patients.”

The da Vinci X Surgical System can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and offers surgeons enhanced visual technology, broader capabilities and improved instrument control. It will be used primarily in the areas of general surgery, bariatrics and urology. Patients will benefit from robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery with smaller incisions, improved access and visualization, shorter recovery times, less blood loss, less scarring and a faster return to regular activities.

With the surgeon in control, the da Vinci X Surgical System gives them an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion, translating a surgeon’s hand movements and bending and rotating in real time. The instrument size allows surgeons to operate through one or a few small incisions. The da Vinci X vision system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area.

The surgery team at RWJUH Rahway is using the robot to perform radical prostatectomy, simple prostatectomy, extended pelvic lymph node dissection, partial nephrectomy, cystectomy, cholecystectomy, inguinal hernia repair, gastric sleeve, umbilical hernia repair and kidney biopsies.
