Holy Name’s Bellorin-Marin recognized as master surgeon in robotic, metabolic and bariatric surgery

Dr. Omar Bellorin-Marin, director of gastrointestinal metabolic, bariatric and robotic surgery at Holy Name, has achieved dual accreditation as a master surgeon in metabolic & bariatric surgery and robotic surgery, and is recognized as a Surgeon of Excellence in robotic surgery by the Surgical Review Corp.

With more than 1,200 robotic surgical procedures under his belt, Bellorin-Marin also has been the guru who knows how to treat a host of bariatric issues, abdominal wall hernias, gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, paraesophageal hernias, gall bladder disease, spleen issues and benign conditions of the gastrointestinal system.

To achieve SRC accreditation, he was evaluated based on rigorous and proven standards set by the SRC, including surgical expertise and experience, procedure-specific outcomes, the standardization of clinical pathways, consultative services, equipment and instruments, patient education and the care delivered.

“This national recognition for robotic, metabolic and bariatric surgery differentiates Dr. Bellorin-Marin as a talented and skilled surgeon who has extensive experience in performing weight loss surgeries and consistently delivers high-quality care with excellent outcomes,” Dr. Vasantha Kondamudi, executive vice president and chief medical officer, said. “He is also a phenomenal educator and will be integral to providing mentorship to tomorrow’s doctors through our new Graduate Medical Education program.”

A dedicated surgeon born in Venezuela, Bellorin-Marin completed his first residency at the University Hospital of Caracas/Central University of Venezuela, his research fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Florida, followed by his second residency at New York-Presbyterian Queens. He completed his fellowship in advanced GI and minimally invasive surgery, including bariatric surgery, robotics, abdominal wall hernias, reflux disease, gall bladder, colon and gastric cancer, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College.

SRC is an internationally recognized patient safety organization. In partnership with key opinion leaders and industry professionals, SRC developed the master surgeon in metabolic & bariatric surgery program to identify surgeons who provide excellent metabolic and bariatric surgeries and are dedicated to continuously improving health care quality and patient safety.
