U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. announced Thursday that $800,000 has been secured for South Amboy’s ferry terminal in the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development spending bill.
President Joe Biden signed the underlying legislation into law last week.
The funding will help complete the ferry terminal, which serves as an important transportation hub for Central Jersey residents who travel to and from New York City.
The funding will be used for environmental remediation, the construction of waterfront bulkheads, a seawall, access roadways, curbing, sidewalks, parking, a pavilion, site lighting as well as water, sewer, gas and electric infrastructure.
“I’m proud to announce today that I’ve secured federal funding for South Amboy to support its ferry terminal,” Pallone (D-6th Dist.) said. “The ferry is already providing New Jersey residents a commute to New York, reducing traffic congestion and travel times. This funding will support important infrastructure projects at the terminal, so it is easily accessible and safe for passengers. I’m glad we were able to get this funding across the finish line.”
“We in South Amboy are extremely fortunate to have a spokesperson like Congressman Pallone to support our intermodal center. The Congressman has been a leader in such projects, which benefit all in our surrounding community, and we are thankful for the additional funds which will be helpful in completing this important undertaking,” South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry said.
Pallone has previously advocated for federal funding for the ferry terminal, including $5.3 million that was awarded from the Federal Transit Administration in support of the city’s Passenger Ferry Grant Program application. Last October, Pallone joined state and local leaders for the ferry’s official launch.
