Port Authority airports saw third-busiest April ever

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that its commercial airports recorded their third-busiest April ever in April 2025, recording 11.9 million passengers. The Port of New York and New Jersey maintained strong growth, with cargo activity growing 6% from April 2024. The PATH commuter rail system recorded its second-busiest month since the pandemic, recording 5.2 million passengers and reaching 74% of pre-pandemic ridership, while the agency’s vehicular crossings continued robust performance on par with prior years.

Airports:

In April 2025, the Port Authority’s commercial airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, Teterboro and New York Stewart) saw their third-busiest April ever, recording approximately 11.9 million passengers. This was a 2% decline from April 2024, the agency’s busiest April on record. Flight cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport due to FAA air traffic control issues accounted for nearly all of the year-to-year decline.

International travel demand continued to show resilience with 4.3 million such passengers in April 2025. This outpaced the prior record for the month of 4.28 million passengers set in April 2024.

Over the first four months of the year, the Port Authority’s commercial airports recorded approximately 43.8 million passengers. This was a decline of 1.5% from the same period of 2024, which was the busiest first quarter on record for the agency’s airports.

Port of New York and New Jersey:

The Port of New York and New Jersey recorded strong activity in April 2025, handling 751,194 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) over the month. This was an increase of 24% from April 2019 and was a 6% jump from April 2024.

Over the first four months of the year, the Port of New York and New Jersey handled 2,954,913 TEUs. This marked a 23% jump from the same period of 2019 and an increase of 9% from the first four months of 2024.

PATH Commuter Rail:

In April 2025, the PATH commuter rail system reached 74% of pre-pandemic April 2019 ridership. It marked the system’s second-busiest month since the pandemic. The month’s total of 5.2 million passengers was second only to the 5.7 million passengers recorded in October 2024. April 2025’s passenger total was 11% above April 2024.

April 2025 also saw average weekday ridership surpass 200,000 passengers for the third time since the pandemic. The month’s average weekday ridership of 203,615 passengers was a jump of 12% from April 2024.

PATH recorded 18.7 million passengers over the first four months of the year. The total was a 7% increase from the same period of 2024. It was 71% of 2019’s year-to-date total.

Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals:

About 10 million eastbound vehicles used the agency’s six vehicular crossings in April 2025. This was 0.4% below volumes recorded in April 2024. It was a decline of 1.2% from April 2019.

Over the first four months of the year, 37.8 million eastbound vehicles used the crossings. The total was 0.6% below the volume level during the same period in pre-pandemic 2019 and was a decrease of 1.1% from the first quarter in 2024, when adjusted for the extra day in 2024, which was a leap year.
