Battleship New Jersey revives classic naval tradition for U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday

In honor of the 250th birthday of the United States Navy, the Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial will host the “Black Dragon Boxing Smoker” – a revival of the classic naval tradition that once brought sailors and marines together for a night of sport and camaraderie aboard ship.

In boxing terminology, a “smoker” is an informal or unsanctioned exhibition or sparring session.

The smoker will take place on October 10. The VIP reception starts at 6 pm and the first bout is at 7:30 pm.

To be held on the historic ship’s fantail, this smoker will feature amateur boxing bouts in which U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen will vie for bragging rights against boxers from Penn State, Ohio State, Cincinnati University, Crandall University, and Trinity College.

Guests will enjoy an immersive experience with craft cocktails, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, curated New Jersey wines and spirits, live music, and cigar service—all set on the nation’s most decorated battleship.

“The Black Dragon Boxing Smoker will be a powerful tribute to 250 years of naval grit, camaraderie, and competition,” said Julianne Dods, Deputy Executive Director of Strategic Growth at the Battleship New Jersey. “We are thrilled to bring this historic tradition back to life aboard the most decorated battleship in American history, and to welcome the midshipmen from Annapolis to our deck.”

Proceeds benefit the continued preservation, education, and public mission of the Battleship New Jersey.

The Battleship New Jersey sits on the Camden Waterfront at 62 Battleship Place.
