New Jersey Transit will receive a $1.4 billion grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration, part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act, the federal government announced Friday.
NJ Transit will use the grant funds for operating expenses to maintain existing rail and bus service — including everything from continued sanitizing of facilities and personal protective equipment to salaries and more — during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The money is part of $25 billion in grant funding under the CARES Act, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in a prepared statement.
“This historic $25 billion in grant funding will ensure our nation’s public transportation systems can continue to provide services to the millions of Americans who continue to depend on them,” Chao said.
