6 N.J. chief nursing officers selected for national CNO list

At a time when the nursing profession has never been more appreciated, six New Jersey chief nursing officers were named to the 50+ CNOs You Should Know list by Becker’s Hospital Review.

Theresa Brodrick of Hackensack Meridian Health, Linda Carroll of Saint Peter’s University Hospital, Carol Jones of Morristown Medical Center and Mary Pat Sullivan of Overlook Medical Center were all honored in a recent issue.

Linda Carroll

Theresa Brodrick, Ph.D., R.N., executive vice president and network chief nurse executive of Hackensack Meridian Health: Brodrick became the executive vice president and network chief nurse executive of Hackensack Meridian Health in April 2019. She is responsible for nursing practices across the network and establishing systemwide nursing policies. Broderick has a 30-plus-year career as a health care leader, previously serving as regional CNO and vice president of clinical integration and transformation for Kaiser Permanente, based in Oakland, California.

Linda Carroll, R.N.-B.C., M.S.N., vice president of patient care services and CNO of Saint Peter’s University Hospital: Carroll has spent more than 30 years as a leader at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, where she currently serves as the vice president of patient care services and CNO. The health system has earned honors including the Magnet recognition and Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses multiple times under Carroll’s leadership. She also founded the Saint Peter’s Opioid Task Force, which includes community members and other nurses who collaborate to address challenges related to opioid addiction.

Lori Colineri, D.N.P., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., senior vice president and CNO of the Southern Region at RWJBarnabas Health: During her time as senior vice president and CNO of RWJBarnabas Health – Southern Region, Colineri has developed collaboration among all levels of nursing and across all campuses to redefine shared governance, the nursing practice model and nursing philosophy. The updated models reflect developing transformational nursing leaders while empowering front-line nurses. She was instrumental in Rutgers School of Nursing receiving a $250,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to develop minority professionals into registered nurses. She also played a role in the health system obtaining a $5 million gift from the Betty Wold Johnson foundation to establish a new nursing education center.

Nancy Holecek, M.A.S., M.H.A., B.S.N., R.N., senior vice president and CNO of the Northern Region at RWJBarnabas Health: Holecek is responsible for fostering an environment that supports professional development as well as research among nursing professionals and advancing nursing practices and health equity throughout RWJBarnabas Health. She has been a key leader in the creation and implementation of systemwide initiatives to standardize the nursing clinical practice. The New Jersey League for Nursing awarded Holecek the Legendary Leaders in Nursing award.

Carol Jones, CNO of Morristown Medical Center: Jones oversees more than 2,000 nurses as the CNO of 700-bed Morristown Medical Center. She is responsible for the hospital’s patient experience as well as the clinical care within several of the hospital’s departments. In recent months, Jones was a member of the team that developed the plan for treating COVID-19 patients and was instrumental in transforming the hospital’s COVID-19 unit from two beds to 400 beds during the surge.

Mary Pat Sullivan, R.N., M.S.N., CNO and chief experience officer of Overlook Medical Center: Sullivan oversees the nursing and patient experience departments at Overlook Medical Center, which is part of Atlantic Health System. She oversees more than 1,100 nurses and focuses on creating a healing environment within the system. Sullivan has clinician and financial responsibility for the inpatient and outpatient care units and implemented a shared governance model for the nursing team. In 2018, Sullivan earned the Divas of Nursing Award from the Institute for Nursing and Foundation of the New Jersey State Nurses Association.
