United Airlines is adding 30 additional daily departures out of Newark Liberty International Airport in July, a 15% increase from its offerings in June — and a sign that air travel is beginning to slowly approach pre-pandemic numbers.
United, which flies more New Jerseyans than any other carrier, will offer 239 daily departures in July, up from 209 in June. The airline also will resume service to three destinations on July 1: Asheville, North Carolina; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Orange County, California.
Bookings for summer travel (June-August) already are up 214% from a year ago, Newark officials said. The airline said it is moving up its service to Dubrovnik, Croatia (from July 8 to July 1) and adding a fourth weekly flight there.
Nationally, United said it is adding 400 daily flights in July — and will fly at 80% of its 2019 schedule for the month.
Ankit Gupta, vice president of domestic network planning and scheduling at United, said the increase in flights will help with connections.
“This July, we’re taking a big step toward flying at pre-pandemic levels for our domestic network,” he said. “By adjusting our bank structures at two key hub airports, we’re able to offer our customers easy connections to destinations across the U.S. so they can start their vacations at times convenient for them.”
United was one of the state’s 10 largest employers before the pandemic.
