Amazon adding nearly 7K new employees in N.J. as part of 100K North American hiring spree

Amazon announced Monday morning it is looking to hire nearly 7,000 new full- and part-time employees in New Jersey — a hiring spree that, when complete, will give the company more than 40,000 employees in the state.

The announcement of new jobs in New Jersey was a small part of the company’s bigger announcement — that it intends to hire 100,000 people in the United States and Canada.

The jobs in New Jersey mostly will be located in Central and North Jersey, as there are more than 2,500 openings in Robbinsville and approximately 1,000 in Carteret, plus hundreds more in Edison.

Amazon spokesperson Rachel Lighty said Amazon hopes to have all new employees in place by the end of fall, in time for the expected holiday rush.

And, unlike previous hirings for seasonal pushes, Lighty said all these hires are permanent.

“New Jersey is a great place for us to do business,” she said. “We have been investing in the state for more than a decade now, and will continue to do so.”

Dave Clark, senior vice president of worldwide operations at Amazon, said the hiring is necessary to keep up with the company’s incredible growth.

“We are opening 100 buildings this month alone across new fulfillment and sortation centers, delivery stations and air hubs,” Clark said.

The jobs announced Monday primarily will be in the fulfillment process, from packing customer orders to shipping and logistics — there will be many opportunities, Amazon said.

The jobs will come with a starting wage of $15 hour as well as a benefits package that begins on the first day of employment. The company also is offering a sign-on bonus of between $250 and $500, depending on the location.

The hiring news Monday comes days after an announcement last week in which Amazon said it intends to hire for 33,000 corporate and technology jobs.

The announcement Monday is another indication of Amazon’s strong presence in the state. The company now has:
