Soccer legend, N.J. native Carli Lloyd rejoins NJ/NY Gotham FC in new role as minority owner alongside Murphy, others

She is twice an Olympic champion and twice a World Cup winner, two-time FIFA Player of the Year, and now she can add owner to her list of soccer accolades.

New Jersey native Carli Lloyd on Wednesday solidified her commitment to the NJ/NY Gotham FC soccer team by joining as a minority owner.

Lloyd joins an ownership group that includes majority owners Tammy and Phil Murphy and minority owners Kristin Bernert, Karen Bryant and Ed Nalbandian.

“As my home club, Gotham FC has always been close to my heart,” Lloyd said. “It’s an honor to begin this new chapter of my soccer career surrounded by people who are committed to making this the best club and league in the world. I look forward to working with Yael Averbuch West, Andrea Pagnanelli and my fellow owners to continue this organization’s impressive transformation.”

Born in Delran, Lloyd joined Gotham FC (then known as Sky Blue FC) as a player in 2018 and played three seasons with the club until her retirement following the 2021 season. During her time on the field, Lloyd made 100-plus National Women’s Soccer League regular-season appearances and played 316 times for the U.S. Women’s National Team — scoring 134 times with 64 assists.

“When Carli retired last season, we always envisioned her remaining a part of Gotham FC, and we are thrilled to make that vision a reality,” said Tammy Murphy, club chair and majority owner of Gotham FC. “Her unique perspective as a former player and world champion will be a tremendous asset as we continue to push this club forward.”

As part of her new role, Lloyd will act as a consultant and advisor to Gotham FC to help boost the club’s profile in local, national and international markets. She will also collaborate with Murphy, Nalbandian, the managing partner, and club leadership on a variety of club initiatives designed to promote the club and support its players.

“It’s a privilege to welcome an all-time great into our ownership ranks,” Nalbandian said. “Carli played such an important role in the evolution of our club as a player thanks to her work ethic, passion and unrivaled desire to win. Those traits will make her an invaluable addition to our leadership, and I cannot wait to work closely with her.”
