These are the major stores closing for Easter in New Jersey

The media is calling the closing of major retailers on Easter a “retail blackout.” What is really happening is a recognition by some companies that Easter Sunday, while not a federal holiday, is one of the quieter days on the retail calendar, so for some of them, it makes more sense to close than stay open.

This year it will be even quieter as Easter, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the last day of Passover, one of the holiest events in the Jewish faith, both fall on Sunday, April 20.

Retailers have stated publicly that they are closing to allow their Christian employees to celebrate Easter.

Not all companies are following suit. Walmart, IKEA, Home Depot, PetSmart, Petco, and Trader Joe’s are among the major retailers that will be open.
