The BLOC Foundation, a nonprofit organization that believes in sustainable and inclusive economic growth in urban communities, recently partnered with Turner Construction Company to host a professional development night, with the goal of empowering residents and local stakeholders with tools to thrive in the workforce and redevelopment landscape.
The event, held at the Unified Vailsburg Service Organization in Newark, brought together about 60 emerging professionals, community leaders, and industry experts for an evening of education, mentorship, and opportunity. The collaboration with New York City-based Turner Construction Company is its first with the BLOC Foundation, and the latest example of the foundation’s mission to create opportunities for minority communities through strategic partnerships and holistic community engagement.
Participants engaged in interactive workshops focused on career readiness, construction industry insights, resume development, and networking strategies. Turner Construction’s team provided one-on-one mentorship, sharing real-world experiences and offering advice for success in both corporate and entrepreneurial settings.
“Meeting with The BLOC Foundation was truly an indispensable experience that left a profound impact on me,” said Shamyah Brown, assistant superintendent at Turner Construction Company. “It was a powerful reminder that everything we need to thrive in Newark is already present within our community—we just need the right resources and support to unlock our full potential. The students’ commitment to making a difference and their eagerness to learn and grow were palpable.”
