The Rockefeller Foundation recently announced that Catherine Wilson, CEO and president of United Way of Greater Newark as one of its fellows for its Big Bets Fellowship.
This fellowship will support her work for the Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed (ALICE) population to invest in community-developed housing and generate financial returns for residents, creating a cooperative economy.
“I’m honored to have been selected for The Rockefeller Foundation’s Big Bets Fellowship. And I’m excited to leverage their resources to increase our work with helping ALICE communities get on the path to financial opportunity,” said Wilson.
Under Catherine’s leadership, United Way of Greater Newark has rolled out programs and models to help the ALICE population receive free tax preparation and financial education, create savings funds, and plan for investments through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, an initiative under the Newark Asset Building Coalition.
The Rockefeller Foundation’s Big Bets Fellowship is focused on driving transformation for communities across the United States — from Appalachia and the Midwest to the East and West Coasts.
Over the course of the four-month fellowship, The Rockefeller Foundation will offer the 12 U.S. Big Bets Fellows programming, networking, and professional development opportunities so that they can better implement and scale their solutions for greater economic growth and healthier, more resilient food systems in American communities.
