Seton Hall University is expanding its presence in Newark, opening a satellite space and Welcome Center at the Gateway complex in the city, it announced Friday.
An open house preview is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Nov. 9, before the university’s first home men’s basketball game at Prudential Center.
The new space is located at Gateway Center Two, part of the recently renovated three-building office complex downtown, and close by the Seton Hall Law School and Pru Center — where the school holds commencement ceremonies as well as athletic events.
“This is just one more step in our longstanding relationship with Newark,” President Joseph Nyre said in a prepared statement. “Our Law School has been in downtown Newark since 1951 and at its present location at the corner of Raymond Boulevard and Market Street since 1991. We are proud to have played a part in Newark’s renaissance, and just as pleased to continue as a partner in its flourishing.”
The satellite space will feature flooring made to resemble a basketball court, and comfortable seating throughout the facility. It will be used for pregame receptions for men’s basketball, alumni meetups, information sessions for prospective students and more. The Welcome Center will feature a full-time staff member.
It also could become a home to Seton Hall’s Newark-focused community outreach programs, including pro bono legal services, nonprofit internships and more.
It will be located within Gateway Two’s “Junction” area, surrounded by retail and dining options. Gateway’s proximity to Newark Penn Station and area parking garages makes the Welcome Center readily accessible to commuters by car and mass transit, the school noted.
“This space is ideal for us,” Nyre said. “Just a few steps away from our Law School and, literally, our home court. We look forward to welcoming current and future Setonians, friends and fans alike to the excitement of being here.”
