Morristown, Overlook (Top 50) and Valley (Top 100) honored in annual Healthgrades rankings

3 from HMH (University, Jersey Shore, Bayshore), Cooperman Barnabas, Princeton and Chilton named to Top 250 list

Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center in Summit were both listed among the Top 50 hospitals in the country, and Valley Hospital in Ridgewood was chosen for the Top 100, according to Healthgrades, which Tuesday released its annual America’s Best Hospitals rankings list.

The list annually ranks the best 250 hospitals in the country — breaking them into three categories: the Top 50, the Top 100 and the Top 250.

Nine New Jersey hospitals in total were selected.

Those making the Top 250 included three from Hackensack Meridian Health (Hackensack University Medical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Bayshore Medical Center) as well as Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro and Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains.

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals. Being selected among the Top 50 puts a medical center among the Top 1% in the country.

Atlantic Health officials were thrilled that Morristown (for the eighth consecutive year) and Overlook (for the fourth consecutive year) achieved that honor. Chilton, also an Atlantic Health facility, made the Top 250 for the first time.

“The addition of Chilton Medical Center to Healthgrades’ lists of Best Hospitals, alongside consecutive recognition for Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center, reflects the commitment to high-quality care and safety central to the culture of Atlantic Health System,” Scott Leighty, the chief health system officer at Atlantic Health, said.

“We are truly proud of how the talented team members and physicians are raising the level of care at each of our medical centers.”

Valley Health CEO Audrey Meyers was thrilled Valley was named among the Top 100.

“This prestigious award for clinical outcomes demonstrates the importance we place on delivering the highest-quality care and service to our patients and their families,” she said.

Being among the Top 100 is more than just an award — it’s a recognition of the lives these hospitals save.

According to Healthgrades, if all hospitals performed similarly to America’s 100 Best, more than 158,000 lives could have been saved.

Additionally, Healthgrades officials said patients treated at one of the 2023 America’s 100 Best Hospitals have, on average, a 25.5% lower risk of dying than if they were treated at a hospital that did not receive the America’s 100 Best Hospitals award.

Hospitals among the Top 100 are considered to be among the Top 2% in the country. Hospitals among the Top 250 are considered to be among the Top 5% in the country.
