Amazon is intending to lay off a total of 93 employees in New Jersey later this summer — but none of the employees impacted are hourly warehouse workers.
The workers involved are all in corporate positions — and are part of the move the company announced in March, when it said it would be laying off 9,000 employees nationwide, ROI-NJ has learned.
The layoffs include 38 remote workers who will be let go July 17 and 55 workers who will be let go July 25, according to a May 1 WARN notice.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in a blog to employees, said the 9,000 layoffs would mostly be in AWS, PXT, Advertising and Twitch.
Jassy, in the blog, said the layoffs are part of the company’s annual planning process, when leaders plan for the future, prioritizing what they feel will matter most to customers and the long-term health of the company.
“For several years leading up to this one, most of our businesses added a significant amount of headcount,” he wrote. “This made sense, given what was happening in our businesses and the economy as a whole. However, given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount.”
With more than 50,000 employees in the state, Amazon is the largest private employer in New Jersey. The employes impacted represent far less than even a half-percent of the company’s in-state workforce.
WARN notices normally cover mass layoffs or facility closings as part of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1989.
