NJIT, IBM team up to give business students digital tech education

The New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark has teamed with IBM to deliver digital technologies and education through the university’s Martin Tuchman School of Management and its Business Analytics Lab.

The official launch of the program is set for 9 a.m. Thursday in the Campus Center Atrium at NJIT.

David McQueeney, IBM’s vice president of corporate technology and community, will give the keynote address at 10 a.m., followed by a panel discussion featuring technology experts, educators and business leaders, and an IBM Watson Analytics Quick Start demonstration.

“Companies across all business sectors are looking for people who leverage and integrate fundamental business knowledge with technology skills to achieve success in today’s data-driven world of global business,” said Martin Tuchman Dean Reggie Caudill. “This agreement, the first of its kind in North America, is another step that demonstrates NJIT’s commitment to ‘Business with the Power of STEM’ on behalf of the Martin Tuchman School of Management.

“The Tuchman School is committed to ensuring that all its students are ready to meet the challenges of the business world, understand the technologies and tools required to succeed in business and have the hands-on experience necessary to build their skills and expand their knowledge.”

In July, the Martin Tuchman School of Management became the first university in North America to adopt the IBM Skills Academy.

Faculty and Instructor training and certification are underway on three career tracks. Business intelligence analyst, business process analyst and predictive analyst modeler courses are being offered for NJIT students, in addition to boot camps and workshops for students across the university and nearby community.

“IBM is committed to doing our part to expand educational opportunities, so more students and professionals can learn the in-demand new-collar skills that will help them thrive in today’s marketplace,” said Naguib Attia, vice president of IBM Global University Programs. “After seeing this program’s success in Africa, we’re excited to be working with NJIT to bring the program to the United States for the first time.”

The IBM Skills Academy Program is part of NJIT’s investment into high-tech training, which includes investing millions of dollars into major new research facilities.

The IBM-NJIT implementation strategy is based on a blended delivery format, with hands-on learning and online instruction modules from the IBM Skills Academy developed by IBM and its Global University Programs, and the integration into business and management courses through the Business Analytics Laboratory.

The initial phase of this agreement will center around the integration of IBM technologies into current MTSM offerings focusing on the following areas: Data Science: Business Intelligence Analyst and Predictive Analytics Modeler; and Business Process: Business Process Analyst.

Students participating in these courses, boot camps and workshops will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized digital badges and IBM technology certifications in addition to normal class credit.
The partnership is intended to expand into professional certificate programs available in addition to or separate from NJIT’s bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs.

The technologies will be delivered to NJIT via the IBM Cloud, which provides access to the company’s Watson suite of cognitive computing capabilities.
